Africa’s sustainable transitions will not be shaped by ambition alone. They will depend on the continent’s ability to connect information, knowledge, data, expertise and technology — and to turn them into better decisions, stronger projects and measurable results.
For more than a decade, VivAfrik has reported on the forces transforming Africa: climate change, energy, agriculture, finance, cities, natural resources, innovation and sustainable development. That editorial history remains the foundation of our identity.
But the challenges facing African institutions, businesses, territories and communities now require more than information. They require knowledge that can be structured, interpreted and applied. They require access to relevant expertise. They require tools that help organisations move from analysis to strategy, from strategy to implementation and from implementation to learning.
This is why VivAfrik is evolving.
Our ambition is to build, progressively and responsibly, an African Green Intelligence platform: an ecosystem that connects media, knowledge, advisory expertise and digital capabilities to support those driving sustainable transformation across the continent.
We are not announcing a finished platform. We are defining a direction, building its first components and committing ourselves to a long-term trajectory towards 2035.
A media foundation built over more than a decade
VivAfrik began in Dakar in June 2015 as a specialised media outlet focused on the green economy and Africa’s sustainable transformations.
Since then, the platform has followed policies, projects, businesses, innovations and debates across the continent. It has reported on climate risks and environmental pressures, but also on the people and organisations developing responses: public institutions, entrepreneurs, researchers, development partners, communities and investors.
This work has created more than an archive. It has built an editorial perspective, a network of sources and a better understanding of the connections between sectors that are too often treated separately.
Energy access affects productivity, public services and industrial development. Climate change reshapes agriculture, water systems, health and urban planning. Green finance depends on credible projects, reliable data and institutions capable of implementation. Digital transformation can strengthen decision-making, but only when technology is designed around real needs.
VivAfrik’s media heritage therefore remains essential. Independent, contextualised information helps people understand what is changing, whose interests are involved and which ideas or solutions deserve attention.
Yet information is only the beginning.
Why information alone is no longer enough
Africa has never had access to so much information about its development and environmental challenges. Scientific reports, public strategies, datasets, investment frameworks, project evaluations and technological solutions are produced every day.
The difficulty is not simply a lack of content. It is also fragmentation.
A report may identify a major risk without reaching the institution able to act on it. A dataset may exist without being available at the scale required for a local decision. A successful solution may remain unknown beyond the territory where it was tested. An organisation may understand the urgency of a transition without knowing which action to prioritise, which partner to mobilise or how to structure a financeable project.
More information does not automatically create more capacity.
Information becomes valuable when it can be verified, placed in context, connected to other evidence and translated into a concrete question: What is changing? Why does it matter here? What options are available? Who can act? What resources are needed? How will progress be measured?
This is the space in which green intelligence becomes useful.
For VivAfrik, Green Intelligence is the capacity to connect knowledge, data, actors, territories, projects, expertise and solutions so that Africa’s sustainable transitions can be better understood and more effectively supported.
It is not a slogan for presenting technology as a solution to every problem. It is a working ambition: to make relevant knowledge easier to find, stronger analysis easier to use, expertise easier to mobilise and action easier to design and assess.
Green intelligence rooted in African realities
Africa’s transitions cannot be understood through a single model.
The priorities of a Sahelian country facing land degradation and water stress are not identical to those of a coastal state exposed to erosion and rising seas. A fast-growing city, a rural community, a small business, a ministry and an investment fund do not encounter the green transition from the same starting point.
Continental perspectives matter, but they must connect with national, sectoral and local realities.
Building intelligence from Africa does not mean rejecting international knowledge. Climate science, global standards, comparative research and international finance are indispensable. The challenge is to interpret them through African contexts and enrich them with evidence, experience and expertise produced on the continent.
This requires an Africa First approach: starting from African countries, institutions, businesses, researchers, professionals, territories and communities. It also requires intellectual openness, methodological rigour and the ability to distinguish confirmed evidence from assumptions or emerging signals.
The goal is not isolation. It is a stronger capacity to participate in global knowledge, negotiate from evidence and make decisions that reflect the continent’s own priorities.
One platform, four complementary capabilities
VivAfrik’s new architecture is organised around four capabilities: Media, Knowledge, Advisory and Digital.
They are not separate brands assembled under one name. Each responds to a different stage in the movement from information to action.
Media: observe, explain and amplify African voices
VivAfrik Media follows the transformations shaping Africa’s sustainable future. It selects relevant developments, places them in context and gives visibility to the people, organisations and ideas driving change.
Its role is not limited to reporting daily events. News, analysis, interviews, explanatory articles, data visualisations, field reporting and thematic dossiers should help readers understand the forces behind the headlines.
Media provides the first signals. It shows what is changing and opens the public conversation.
Knowledge: turn information into understanding
VivAfrik Knowledge is designed to gather, structure and analyse the knowledge needed to understand Africa’s transitions.
Over time, this capability will include deeper publications, briefs, reports, observatories, data and indicators, country profiles and connections between actors, projects, territories and issues.
The purpose is not to create another isolated repository. It is to organise knowledge so that it can be found, compared, contextualised and used. Knowledge must help identify trends, risks, opportunities and gaps — and make complex issues intelligible to decision-makers as well as specialists.
Knowledge transforms scattered information into insight.
Advisory: turn insight into strategies and projects
VivAfrik Advisory connects knowledge with decision-making and implementation.
Public institutions, businesses, development organisations and investors often need to move from a broad ambition to a clear strategy, programme or project. This requires diagnosis, prioritisation, technical expertise, stakeholder engagement, financing pathways, governance arrangements and measurable objectives.
Advisory is intended to support that transition. Its fields include the green economy, climate and sustainable finance, resilience, energy, agriculture, natural resources, territories, innovation and digital transformation.
Its value should be measured not by the production of more documents, but by the quality and usefulness of the decisions, programmes and projects it helps to structure.
Digital: turn needs and methods into usable systems
VivAfrik Digital develops platforms, data systems and digital solutions that strengthen organisations’ capacity to understand, manage and act.
The starting point is not technology itself. It is the operational problem that needs to be solved.
An organisation may need to structure dispersed data, monitor a programme, improve a fragmented process, create a decision dashboard or make a body of knowledge easier to use. Digital tools can support these objectives when they are grounded in user needs, sound governance and a clear understanding of the work they are meant to improve.
Artificial intelligence may contribute to research, analysis, monitoring or responsible automation. But human judgement, validation and accountability must remain central.
Digital turns selected methods and needs into practical capabilities.
Connecting countries, resources and actors
The four capabilities are supported by spaces that help users enter the ecosystem from different directions.
Countries is intended to connect continental intelligence with national contexts. A useful understanding of a country must bring together its trajectory, policies, data, institutions, businesses, projects, finance, risks and emerging signals.
Resources progressively organises VivAfrik’s knowledge assets — including more than 14,000 historical items — so that reports, data, publications, tools and country material can become easier to discover and use.
Green Business makes visible the organisations and solutions contributing to a greener, more inclusive and resilient African economy. Knowledge explains what is changing and why; Green Business helps reveal who is acting, where and how.
Together, these spaces can help connect issues with territories, evidence with expertise, and organisations with opportunities for collaboration.
A value chain, not a collection of activities
The logic behind VivAfrik’s transformation can be expressed through a simple sequence:
observe → understand → decide → build → measure → learn
Media observes and explains. Knowledge structures and interprets. Advisory helps prioritise and design. Digital equips implementation and management. Measurement generates evidence. Experience returns to the knowledge base and improves future decisions.
In practice, this process will not always be linear. A project may reveal a weakness in the original diagnosis. A digital tool may expose gaps in the available data. Field experience may challenge an assumption. A strategy may need to be redesigned when the institutional or financial context changes.
This capacity to learn is not a sign of failure. It is part of building solutions that respond to reality.
The objective is therefore not to multiply services or features. It is to improve the quality of the connections between information, knowledge, expertise, data, decisions and implementation.
What already exists — and what remains to be built
VivAfrik’s transformation has begun.
The website now provides dedicated spaces for Media, Knowledge, Advisory, Digital, Countries and Resources. Green Business already presents organisations working across several dimensions of sustainable transition. VivAfrik’s editorial archive offers a substantial foundation for future knowledge products.
Some operational tools and methods are also beginning to emerge, including diagnostic approaches and systems designed to support the movement from an initial challenge to a more structured decision or project.
But we will not present this first architecture as a completed platform.
Observatories, advanced country profiles, data products, knowledge systems, diagnostic tools, territorial networks and deeper intelligence services will require time. They will depend on qualified expertise, reliable sources, clear governance, sustainable business models, trusted partnerships and careful experimentation.
Some initiatives will demonstrate their value quickly. Others will need to be improved, redesigned or discontinued. VivAfrik must be able to document not only progress, but also limitations and lessons.
Trust will depend on that honesty.
Why 2035 is a trajectory
VivAfrik 2035 is not a claim that the destination has already been reached. It is a strategic horizon.
We have chosen a timeframe long enough to build capabilities methodically, test ideas, strengthen partnerships, develop products, improve governance and extend our ability to connect countries, sectors and actors across the continent.
Four principles will guide this journey:
- Africa First: begin with the continent’s realities, priorities and actors;
- Evidence-driven: ground analysis and decisions in the best available knowledge and data;
- Integrated: connect Media, Knowledge, Advisory and Digital rather than allowing them to operate as isolated silos;
- Impact-oriented: judge value by useful results, learning and the capacity to support real transformation.
By 2035, our ambition is for VivAfrik to become a recognised African reference for Green Intelligence: a platform and network connecting knowledge, expertise and solutions in service of the institutions, businesses, partners and decision-makers transforming Africa.
The scale of that ambition requires humility. No single organisation can build Africa’s green intelligence infrastructure alone.
Building with those who are transforming Africa
VivAfrik’s future will depend on collaboration with researchers, public institutions, businesses, experts, universities, development partners, investors, innovators, media organisations and communities.
We are interested in partnerships that create concrete value: producing knowledge, building observatories, developing country or sector intelligence, structuring projects, mobilising expertise, designing useful digital systems and making African solutions more visible.
The VivAfrik that has reported on Africa’s sustainable transformations is not disappearing.
It is becoming the foundation of a VivAfrik that seeks to understand those transformations more deeply, support those responsible for leading them and, where relevant, help equip their action.
That is the meaning of our journey from an African media outlet to Africa’s Green Intelligence Platform.
